What could have been a simple traffic ticket ended up for this pain management physician, an arrest with possibly more serious charges. But he put his own neck in the noose.  Other doctors need to learn from this. No jokes aside.

Jose A. Torres, 65, of Warren, Oklahoma was pulled over by police officers just after 1 a.m. on Jan. 10 after a run on the license plate of the vehicle Torres was driving came up with no information on file. The officers asked for his license and registration and he kept trying to show them his medical license.  First mistake. Did he really think that being a doctor would get him off the hook?  Obviously he has no idea what is going on. Doctors are law enforcement targets now BECAUSE they are doctors.

Mistake # 2: He told officers he was an anesthesiologist and practiced pain management.  Oh well, doc! Now you are definitely in their sights!

Dr. Torres could not produce the vehicle registration so he was asked to get out of the Cadillac CTS he was driving. So now the officers begin a search of his vehicle.  They were not able to find the vehicle registration.  While trying to locate the vehicle identification number (VIN), Dr. Torres volunteered the information that there was a gun in the car, that he kept for his protection.

Officers located a 9mm handgun in the console. They also found a pill bottle with suspected Adderall in it, but the bottle had a torn label that was not prescribed to Torres. He told officers they belonged to a colleague.  Bad news for Dr. Torres. Having in your possession controlled substances not prescribed to you is automatic charges of possession with intent to distribute in most regions. I don’t know about Ohio.

The officers were able to locate the vehicle registration by the VIN number and found it to be registered to Dr. Torres’s wife with an expiration of October 2020.  So obviously during the COVID period when DMV’s halted normal processes, they simply didn’t bother doing it later when things got back to normal.

Dr. Torres was arraigned and pleaded not guilty Tuesday. Bail was set at $5,000. A pretrial is set for Feb. 28.  According to the report, he was charged with carrying a concealed weapon and improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle and a traffic violation. And all because he didn’t have current vehicle registration.  Let that be a lesson for all of us.  Also, don’t increase the target potential by announcing you are in pain management. Most law enforcement depend on CSA charges to fund their offices. So you automatically become the job security.
