President’s Day Reflection: Restoring Liberty by Repealing the Controlled Substances Act
This President’s Day, we celebrate the legacy of American leadership — men and women who have worked to uphold liberty, justice, and the rule of law. Yet as we reflect on their vision, we must recognize a troubling reality: our nation’s foundational promise of freedom has been eroded by one of the most oppressive laws in modern history — the Controlled Substances Act (CSA) of 1970.
Originally intended to protect public health, the CSA has instead fueled mass criminalization, devastated lives, and obstructed medical progress. It has stripped doctors of their professional judgment, punished patients for seeking humane care, and turned chronic illness into a legal liability. No President who valued liberty or compassion would defend such a system.
Today, we have the opportunity — and the duty — to restore America’s founding principles. Repealing the CSA is not just a policy change; it is a moral correction and a recommitment to constitutional governance. A government that criminalizes legitimate medical practice or personal healing choices cannot claim to be “of the people, by the people, and for the people.”
This President’s Day, let us honor those who led with courage by demanding that our leaders do the same. It is time for an executive and legislative movement to end the failed drug war, to free the innocent, and to rebuild a health care system rooted in trust — not fear.
